The fifth generation Ford Mustang is a pony car that was maufactured by Ford between 2004 and 2014. The 5th generation began with the 2005 model, and recieved a "facelift" for the 2010 model year. There have been several variations of the 5th generation Mustang that includes the Mustang GT/California Special, Shelby Mustang, the Bullit Mustang, and the Boss 302 Mustang.

The original 5th generation Mustang GT featured an all-aluminium 4.6L 3 valave SOHC Modular V8 with variable cam-shaft timing a stronger Tremec TR-3650 transmission. Power output was 300hp (224kW), and was capable of 0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds as well as a quarter mile in 12.8 seconds @ 173km/h. It also featured a stiffer, better handling version of the standard Mustang suspension, larger brakes, 4 channel ABS with traction control and larger diameter wheels.

The second to last edition of the 5th generation GT (2011-2012) recived a new engine, the all-aluminium 32-valve 5.0L DOHC V8, codenamed Coyote. The 2011 Mustang was the first of Fords vehicles to use this particular motor in a production vehicle. While it has a similar displacement to the original "5.0L" (in reality 4.9L/302cu in), the Coyote unit has more in common with the 4.6L V8 and other modular engines it replaced. It is a slightly heavier engine over it's predecessor (5kg's) but the redline has been raised to 7000rpm. It also incorporates piston cooling oil jets that help keep the pistons cool under heavy load. The 2011 GT also recieved a new transmissions. Both transmissions were heavier duty versions of the same designs offered with the V6 Mustang; a Getrag/Ford MT82 6 speed manual, and Fords 6R80 6 speed automatic.

The 2011 GT also recieved the same non powertrain upgrades as the 2011 V6 Mustang. New features that were exclusive to the GT were "5.0" fender badges, replacing the "GT" badges used previously, and optional Brembo brake package which included 14 inch Brembo front brakes taken from the Shelby GT500, unique 19" wheels with Pirelli P-Zero ultra high performance summer only tyres, a unique calibration of the Advanced Track stability system including a "sports" mode, and suspension enhancments such as stiffer springs
